Research Institute of Balneology and Medical Rehabilitation: Science, Modern Technologies and Results-Oriented Work

The Research Institute of Balneology and Medical Rehabilitation under the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan continues to develop scientific and practical areas in balneology, medical rehabilitation and restorative treatment. Today, the Institute’s activities focus on developing modern approaches to disease prevention, early diagnosis and health recovery. Currently, the Institute is implementing a research and technical programme aimed at the prevention and medical rehabilitation of occupational diseases of the respiratory system, including dust-related diseases, as well as research into the early diagnosis of respiratory diseases in children using artificial intelligence and machine learning.
One of the key indicators of the Institute’s development is the results of its scientific work. This year, the Institute’s staff have published more than 15 scientific articles, including 11 publications in peer-reviewed Q1–Q2 journals indexed in Web of Science and Scopus. The Institute has prepared and published the Guidelines “Balneotherapy and Medical Rehabilitation in Kazakhstan”, the Medical Atlas “Natural Therapeutic Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, methodological recommendations on medical rehabilitation for patients with respiratory diseases, and a monograph on pulmonary rehabilitation in sanatorium and resort settings. A particularly significant achievement was the approval of the clinical protocol “Medical Rehabilitation. Stage Three (Late Stage). Chronic Respiratory Diseases”, aimed at improving the quality and standardisation of rehabilitation care. In addition, the Institute’s Local Bioethics Committee successfully completed national certification for the 2026–2029 period.
Alongside its scientific activities, the Institute is consistently developing its educational direction. In 2026, the Educational Centre of the Research Institute of Balneology and Medical Rehabilitation was established. Its activities are aimed at improving the qualifications of healthcare professionals, developing professional competencies, and disseminating modern knowledge and practical approaches in balneology and medical rehabilitation. The establishment of the Centre has become an important step towards creating a unified platform for education, professional exchange and the implementation of research findings into practical healthcare.
An important area of the Institute’s digital development is the e-Shipazhay project, aimed at digitalising the sanatorium and resort sector, improving access to information and enhancing interaction between healthcare professionals, industry organisations and patients. Work on the project is currently ongoing, with its functionality being developed and expanded in stages and the necessary information being continuously added. The implementation of the project will create additional opportunities for systematising information on sanatorium and resort treatment and medical rehabilitation, as well as for the further introduction of modern digital tools into this field.
A significant area of the Institute’s professional activity is the annual International Scientific and Practical Forum “Shipazhay”, which brings together specialists in balneology, medical rehabilitation, science and healthcare. In 2026, the 11th International Scientific and Practical Forum “Shipazhay-2026” was held, serving as a platform for discussing modern technologies and innovative approaches in balneology and medical rehabilitation, exchanging scientific and practical experience, developing international cooperation and strengthening professional ties. The Forum is held with the participation of leading scientific and medical organisations from Kazakhstan and international partners and contributes to the development of a professional community committed to the further advancement of the sanatorium and resort sector. Following the Forum, work also continues on developing the Institute’s scientific and publishing activities, including the preparation of materials for the specialised scientific and practical journal “Issues of Balneology of the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
A particularly important practical area of the Institute’s activities is its Burabay Health and Wellness Complex, located in a unique natural resort area. In 2026, the Institute’s Burabay branch successfully underwent re-accreditation, confirming its compliance with established requirements for the quality of medical and sanatorium-resort care. The facility provides sanatorium and resort treatment and medical rehabilitation programmes using the region’s natural therapeutic factors and modern restorative treatment methods. The complex’s specialists provide comprehensive care aimed at restoring and strengthening patients’ health, with particular attention to the individual selection of rehabilitation measures, physiotherapy and balneological procedures, therapeutic exercise and other restorative treatment methods.
An important aspect of the complex’s work is the combination of the resort’s natural resources with modern medical technologies, enabling a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation. The scientific knowledge acquired at the Institute and the methodological approaches developed by its specialists are put into practical use at the complex, establishing a direct link between scientific research and real patient care.
The Institute’s efforts to expand its practical base continued with the development of its network of health and wellness complexes. In 2026, the Institute opened its second branch in the capital — the Astana Health and Wellness Complex, a modern urban facility combining sanatorium and resort treatment, medical rehabilitation, preventive healthcare and restorative leisure within an urban environment. The opening of the new complex expands the Institute’s capacity to provide rehabilitation and wellness services to the population while creating additional opportunities for the implementation of modern medical and restorative technologies in everyday practice.
Thus, the Institute’s development today is being carried out simultaneously in several areas: scientific research, the implementation of modern technologies, educational development, digitalisation, expansion of its practical facilities and international professional cooperation. This combination makes it possible to establish a continuous link between science, professional training and practical medical care.
